Traditional Gyros Recipe

Ingredients 

Meat and Marinade

  • 500 g Pork shoulder, thinly sliced
  • 3 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon Olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon Oregano, dried
  • 1 teaspoon Thyme, dried
  • 1 teaspoon Paprika
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper

Tzatziki Sauce

  • 1 cup Greek yogurt
  • 1 unit Cucumber, grated and drained
  • 1 tablespoon Lemon juice
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon Dill, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon Olive oil
  • 1 pinch Salt

To Serve

  • 4 units Pita bread
  • 1 unit Tomato, sliced
  • 1 unit Red onion, sliced
  • 1 cup Lettuce, shredded

Instructions 

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine pork, garlic, olive oil, oregano, thyme, paprika, salt, and pepper. Marinate for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the marinated pork until browned and cooked through, about 10-12 minutes.
  3. In another bowl, mix Greek yogurt, grated cucumber, lemon juice, garlic, dill, olive oil, and salt to make tzatziki sauce.
  4. Warm pita bread in a skillet or oven.
  5. Assemble gyros by placing cooked pork on pita bread, adding tomato, red onion, lettuce, and a generous dollop of tzatziki sauce. Roll up and serve.
